At David and Mary Thomson, the ACE space is a place for students to learn about African and Caribbean heritage, and to empower by developing leadership skills. In 2008, a group of teachers started ACE at the request of some students who wanted to foster a sense of community and have a positive voice at Thomson.
Currently ACE meets at lunchtime every Friday and sponsors monthly special events such as authors’ forums, guest speakers, field trips and contests. Monthly events are followed by a feast put on by ACE members. In the past, ACE has been involved in the White Ribbon Campaign, and the Black History Month Assembly. Last year ACE spearheaded the fundraiser for both Haitian and Chilean earthquake survivors. The goal of ACE is to engage students so that they connect to their past, focus on their present, and succeed in their future. Anyone is welcome to join. See you in the ACE space.
